Pitch Me Another!: The 1951 Ford Consul

Across the country, car dealers are holding model year-end sales events to make way for their 2012 inventory. This ad for the Ford Consul, which appeared in the issue of June 16, 1951, touts many of the features you’ll hear when car-makers promote their new lineups this fall: safety, comfort, performance, and, above all, economy. Cars were also on the minds of the editors of the Talk of the Town in 1951. This issue featured a story about the postwar increase of production at the General Motors plant in Tarrytown (closed in 1996), which built cars for overseas export. Ironically enough, the Consul was produced in Ford’s British factories and imported to the U.S. market. This year marks the sixtieth anniversary of the Consul’s début.
