Slide Show: Holiday Covers

Since Santa Claus first appeared on the cover of The New Yorker nearly ninety years ago, he has taken many forms, from a tuxedoed gentleman donning a fur-trimmed coat to a reluctant beach bum in a too-balmy North Pole. Other years, our illustrators have captured the spirit of the holiday season by depicting its cherished rituals—carols, cards, and consumer spending. Enjoy this sampling of festive covers from the archive.
