A Look at Ferguson

All photographs by Matt Eich.

On Tuesday, we sent the photographer Matt Eich to Ferguson, Missouri, to document the second week of protests after a police officer shot unarmed teen-ager Michael Brown. The day before, Missouri Governor Jay Nixon had called in the National Guard to help manage the often violent conflict between protestors and local police. Eich told me that while the violence appears to have subsided—after a relatively calm night, Nixon asked the National Guard to withdraw on Thursday—the climate remains volatile. Jelani Cobb, who has also been reporting from Ferguson, agreed: “There’s really not an easy way to predict where this is going to go.”
