A Sled Dog’s Summer

This past week, on the New Yorker photo department’s Instagram feed, the photographer Katie Orlinsky posted from interior Alaska, where she has been visiting sled-dog kennels. Orlinsky documented summer life at Wild and Free Mushing and other kennels, as new puppy litters and young dogs are trained for future sled races, including the Iditarod. Orlinsky told me that the long summer days in Eureka mean a relentless life style for a musher and his dogs. “Taking care of sixty dogs and puppies … dog handlers can work any time of day, all day long,” she said.
