On Tuesday evening, the New Yorker staff writer George Packer spoke with the magazine’s features director, Daniel Zalewski, about the country’s tumultuous present and its uncertain future. They discussed stories from Packer’s new book, “The Unwinding: An Inner History of the New America,” in which he writes about the lives of American citizens, from a factory worker in the Rust Belt to Newt Gingrich and Jay-Z.
