Last September, on Photo Booth, we profiled the emerging photographer Sara Cwynar and her project “Flat Death.” Cwynar, who constructs tableaux from stock imagery and obsolete photography manuals, told me at the time that she draws on “a huge personal archive … of vernacular, pop-culture images.” She arranges these images on a flat surface, layering multiple views of the same object in order to add dimension to the final photograph, which intentionally confuses the viewer’s perception. In other works in the series, she arranges pictures of photographic and office equipment on top of printed photographs to create trompe l’oeil effects. Cwynar, who has expanded “Flat Death” since last fall, will exhibit the series in a solo show that opens on April 5th, at Foxy Production.
