Photos of “Cloven Kingdom”

“Paul Taylor often populates his dances with creatures who seem half human and half something else rather appalling,” Joan Acocella writes, in this week’s Goings On About Town. “The greatest of these pieces is ‘Cloven Kingdom,’ from 1976, which is part of the Paul Taylor Dance Company’s season at the David H. Koch Theatre this month.” I’ve long loved Ruven Afanador’s work with flamenco dancers, particularly the way he captures movement in strange, sculptural, intense photographs. Earlier this month, we commissioned Afanador to photograph members of the Paul Taylor Dance Company—Laura Halzack, Robert Kleinendorst, Christina Lynch Markham, Sean Mahoney, Heather McGinley, Aileen Roehl, James Samson, and Michael Trusnovec—as they rehearsed “Cloven Kingdom.”
