Portfolio: On and Off the Runway

In February, the photographer Lauren Lancaster spent New York Fashion Week photographing Kate Goodling, a twenty-three-year-old from Oregon who became a model after a college friend encouraged her to submit her photo to a local modeling agency. Lancaster followed Goodling, who is now represented by Ford Models, from her Brooklyn apartment to casting calls and fittings in Manhattan. During Fashion Week, Goodling’s work day started at 7 A.M. and often lasted until well past midnight; Lancaster said she was impressed by her determination in the midst of “a tide of other people’s decisions and plans.” The days alternated between stretches of downtime and rushes of pre-show chaos: in one instance, a dress Goodling was supposed to wear was still being sewn three minutes before the show began. Still, Goodling said that she looked forward to each show as a moment when the designers’ months of hard work were revealed: “No matter how you personally feel about the aesthetic of the clothing … there is such an excited energy, you can’t help but smile when the designers go out for the finale.”
