30 Under 30

More than six hundred and fifty young photographers submitted portfolios to this year’s second annual 30 Under 30 award, a partnership between Magnum photos and the Photography Show. Applicants were asked to present documentary projects addressing social issues, and were judged on factors including narrative strength, execution, and originality of concept. Among the winners, whose work will be exhibited in March at the National Exhibition Centre, in Birmingham, England, is the Chinese photographer Jiehao Su, whose project “Borderland” began as a response to his mother’s death. In an artist statement, Su writes that the work is an attempt to “rebuild my self-awareness” through an autobiographical portrait of his homeland. Hemad Nazari, who was born in Rasht, Iran, documented shepherds in northern Iran for his project “Shepherder.” “I Called Her Lisa-Marie,” a five-year project by the French photographer Clémentine Schneidermann, took shape while she lived among Elvis super-fans in working-class communities in Switzerland and Wales.
