Sounds of Light and Hope

In 1998, the photographer Fernando Moleres connected with the Al Nour Wal Amal Association, a nonprofit institution in Egypt that provides blind women with education, literacy programs, and professional training, but which is best known for its chamber orchestra (al nour wal amal means “light and hope”). In 2011, Moleres travelled with the organization, documenting the orchestra’s European tour and the lives of its musicians. Moleres was drawn to these blind female musicians, he said, because of “their joviality, their positive attitude toward life, and their desire to enjoy. The most surprising thing was the combination of colors with which they dressed, their tidiness, and their vanity—they are still aware of the importance of the façade.”
