North via South: Mar Dulce, Up the Amazon

In January, 2013, Magda Biernat and Ian Webster began a yearlong journey from Antarctica to Alaska. We last checked in with the husband-and-wife duo in early April, after they had completed an extensive trip through Brazil, photographing the amazing works of Oscar Niemeyer. I recently caught up with the couple after their journey through the Amazon: “We left Belém on April 12th, aboard the Liberty Star, and sailed upriver for three days, to Santarém,” Magda and Ian told me. “From there, we hired a guide to take us six hours up the Tapajós River to Fordlandia, where we spent a day photographing. We left Santarém aboard the Cisna Branca, bound for Manaus. From Manaus, we took a three-day excursion north, into the Amazon jungle.” They are currently on the high plains of Bolivia, with an Internet connection that works some of the time! You can see their earlier “North via South” posts, as well as more photos from their Amazon journey. Below is a slide show of pictures from the Amazon, with captions by Magda and Ian.
