This is expected to be California’s hottest year on record. Towns in the north are running out of water; the south has been asked to conserve. In the Central Valley, farmwork has dried up with the water supply.
Last month, we published the photographer Matt Black’s portfolio documenting the devastating drought in California; since then, the situation has shown no signs of improving. As Dana Goodyear wrote, in September, “without water, nearly half a million acres of crops have been fallowed, and in some communities unemployment is more than ten per cent.” Accompanying this slide show is a video shot in collaboration with Ed Kashi.
